Cake - How Sweet It Is!

Questions for your Baker

By: Wedding Connections

Selecting the perfect wedding cake is as sweet as it sounds, but if you don't ask all the right questions during your search, it just may turn sour.

Consider the following questions:

1. Will I be able to view a portfolio of cake designs, see the actual cakes or taste some samples? (Ask for references that you can call. Ask to see their license from the state health department)

2. What ingredients are used and what are your options? Will the ingredients be purchase locally and in season? (The fresher the ingredients, the better your cake will taste.)

3. Who will be the designer (s) involved in preparing your cake? (If there is more than one, ask these questions: Will they all be working out of the same kitchen? Will you be able to meet all those involved? How long has the team been working together?)

4. When decorating your cake with flowers - Will your baker place the flowers on the cake? Who will provide the flowers? Will the cake designer work with your florist?

5. Is the baker open to preparing custom designs? (If so make sure you take pictures or color samples of your personal style.)

6. When will your cake be prepared? Make sure that it will be prepared as close to the wedding date as possible to guarantee freshness.

7. Ask how many cake orders will your baker be preparing on your wedding weekend?

8. Are flavors & fillings priced different? Will there be extra labor costs for custom designs or fillings? Are cakes priced by the slice?

9. Does the cakes price include the anniversary cake tier? (Some Bakers may give you a gift certificate, so that you come back and order a fresh tier for your first anniversary.)

10. Is the delivery cost included? If not, how much does it cost? (Don’t try to cut costs by picking up the cake. You’ll want to be sure that the cake arrives in one piece.)
